ADVOCATING FOR A GREENER ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Ever
since Adolfo Carrión Jr. became the Bronx Borough President,
he has been a leading advocate for a greener environment by promoting
conservation and efficiency and by putting a stop to pollution. Carrión
developed a plan for the Bronx Waterfront. His plan strives to improve
public access to the waterfront, protect our natural resources, upgrade
existing parkland and expand business opportunities in the Bronx. The
Bronx shorelines offer tremendous opportunities for recreational venues,
ecological restoration, quality neighborhood development and a vibrant
working waterfront.
In addition to supporting environmental initiatives such
as sustainable development by encouraging the use of alternative fuel
vehicles and urging developers to use energy efficient designs and recycled
materials, Carrión has taken a strong stance on waste management.
He not only opposed plans to increase the number of garbage incinerators,
but he also advocated the plan for barge and rail export of waste and
for borough self-sufficiency.
Carrión is committed to making the Bronx a cleaner,
more environmentally friendly home in which to live. In addition to advocating
for the replacement of trucks with barge and rail transport (thereby cutting
down on pollution), Carrión supported the planting of trees in
Hunts Point to improve air quality. Carrión is also responsible
for making the Bronx a more energy-efficient place. Throughout his term
in office, Carrión has pushed for new ways of recycling to our
energy supply, thereby meeting the power needs of Bronx residents, while
still managing to circumvent unnecessary pollution. Carrión’s
vision of clean air and clean water is no longer a “pipe dream.” He
was instrumental in an effort to capture local storm water and keep it
out of the combined sewer overflows using natural filtering systems, thereby
enabling its return to the Bronx River clean and unpolluted.
