EXPANDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND HOMEOWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Affordable housing promotes more stable families, healthier children,
better educational outcomes, and increased economic self-sufficiency for
low-income families working to transition off of public assistance and
improve their lives. That is why Bronx Borough President Adolfo
Carrión Jr. has been a strong proponent of preserving and expanding
affordable housing and homeownership opportunities for the Bronx residents.
One of Bronx’s greatest challenges today is shortage of housing
exacerbated by increase in borough’s population since the year 2000.
Since housing supply has not kept up with the increase in population,
Bronx is in a state of housing emergency. To address this problem, Carrión
is working in conjunction with other organizations to put in place housing
development plans in the Bronx.
- Carrión is working in close collaboration with The Bronx Overall
Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), a federally designated agency
for economic development in the county, to provide grants for supporting
homeownership assistance programs that seek to increase homeownership
rates in the Bronx.
- Carrión is supporting and working with the NYC Partnership
to expand and increase number of housing development projects in the
Bronx, such as the construction of medium-density apartment buildings
on East 163 and East 168 Streets and construction of new housing along
the Harlem River Waterfront in the Fordham Landing project.
- In the University Heights area, Carrión is working with the
New York City Housing Authority in a project that will renovate and
rehabilitate 1000 housing units.
- To increase housing for seniors, Carrión is providing funding
for 382 housing units for the elderly to be constructed in 5 major housing
projects throughout the Bronx.
- In addition, Carrión is working with private developers, community
development corporations and others who are using tax credits to build
affordable housing in our community, such as the Highbridge Homes Housing
Development that will consist of 60 affordable two family homes.
