INCREASING BUSINESS PRODUCTIVITY BY REDUCING CONGESTION

Transportation is one component that Borough President Adolfo Carrión, Jr. is focusing on as he promotes economic development in the Bronx. Traffic is one of the biggest challenges that urban areas face as its economy and infrastructure diversify.  Carrión is working to ensure that all economic development strategies protect neighborhoods and existing roadways from unnecessary congestion.  Carrión believes that a balance can be struck between development and quality of life issues.

  • At the request of Carrión, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Center is conducting a study to explore the feasibility of freight ferry service between JFK and La Guardia and the Hunts Point Peninsula. The proposed freight ferry service will be used to deliver fish and other perishable, time sensitive products. If the ferry service plan is enacted, it will highly benefit the economies of the Bronx and Queens as well as the movement of goods regionally. The project is expected to be completed in 2004.
  • Carrión is working to create a plan to protect the East Bronx from the traffic that occurs on and off the Hutchinson River Parkway ramp in the area of the Bronx Development Center. Federal T-3 funds have been allocated for the execution of this project, giving way to another economic development project that will bring great benefits to the Bronx.
